What is a Social Story?

A social story is a short, personalized narrative that uses simple language and visuals to explain what a patient can expect in a specific situation.  It uses simple words and images to explain each step.  This helps to make the experience feel familiar before they even arrive.

Social stories can be especially helpful for kids who feel nervous about new places or who do best when they know what to expect.

Reading the story together ahead of time can:

  • Ease worries and reduce stress

  • Build confidence and cooperation

  • Make the visit smoother for your child and your family

Think of it as a gentle preview that helps your child feel more comfortable, safe, and ready for their appointment.
